The Mentor
Take yourself off to the magnificent Vaudeville theatre for a new play that's been beautifully translated from the original German and is causing a real stir in theatreland. It's The Mentor, and it stars the fabulous F. Murray Abraham of TV's Homeland fame, an actor who won the Academy Award for Best Actor for his role in Miloš Forman’s movie masterpiece Amadeus. The young writer Martin is played by Daniel Weyman of Nicholas Nickelby, King Lear and Kafka's Dick fame, also a lynch pin in TV's Silent Witness. It's all set to be a smash hit in the West End, a piece of pure class that also happens to be completely hilarious.
The author Daniel Kehlmann is a literary superstar. His book Measuring the World has sold upwards of three million copies in Germany alone, translated into 40+ different languages. This is the first time a play of his has been staged outside his native country. What's the story? Abraham plays an ageing playwright who earns €10,000 for a five-day development scheme with an emerging writer, a young man with an ego the size of a house... and the same size as his mentor's. As you can imagine when two egos of this size clash, the results are dramatic. In this case they are also extremely funny. If your love of laughter matches your pleasure in top class stage comedy, this one's for you.
