Oscar Wilde's four magnificent Victorian plays have survived more than a century since they first exploded onto the stage, a series of dramas that genuinely shocked audiences and dismayed The Establishment, redefining theatre with their typical wicked Wilde wit and mischief. They still resonate down the years, which is why Lady Windermere's Fan is back in the West End. This time it's thanks to a season devised by the talented Dominic Dromgoole, ex-Artistic Director of the Globe theatre. He has created a brand new theatre company called Classic Spring, tasked with celebrating the ground-breaking work of the nation's finest proscenium playwrights.
The idea is to perform the plays in the theatres they were intended for. Wilde would no doubt be thrilled. The first two in Classic Spring's Wilde season are A Woman of No Importance and Lady Windermere's Fan, closely followed by An Ideal Husband and The Importance of Being Earnest. Lady Windermere is directed by the brilliant Kathy Burke, who gathered a load of critical acclaim for her work on The Quare Fellow and Once a Catholic. What a treat! If you love great satire, you'll adore the Oscar Wilde Season...
